Congratulations to Annie Parent, Administration Associate in Norfolk, VA, who celebrates 40 years with HOST today!

Annie was originally hired as a telex operator at HOST’s first ship agency office in Newport News, VA. “Her first office was a five-by-five-foot telex room,” remembers Ned Barham, who started working for HOST only six months earlier. (Read about Ned here.)

Those were the days before computers when agents would write down their messages on legal pads and hand them to Annie to send to the ships. “She sat there, all day long, facing the telex machine, reading our sloppy writing to send our messages,” Ned continues. “And all the while, she was the kindest person to work with. Annie is the unsung Rock of Gibraltar for the company, there for us through thick and thin for 40 years."

“No one could work the telex room the way Annie could,” says Kristian Thompson, Cargo Services Supervisor, who has worked with Annie for 23 years. “She ran circles around everyone, and she still does. She’s got to be one of the hardest working people I’ve ever met.”

Over the years, Annie has taken on a variety of roles at HOST, never backing down from a challenge. Beyond the telex machine and answering phones, she has played a significant role in our operations department, handling permits, cash to masters, and the enormous amount of paperwork that comes with each ship.

From all of us at HOST, thank you, Annie, for 40 incredible years of dedicated service!
