On the morning of July 1, 2014, the South Korean bulk carrier J.S. Comet was en route from Barranquilla, Colombia to Savannah, Georgia when suddenly 19 of 21 crewmembers fell ill with symptoms of food poisoning. Due to the severity of the situation and with Tropical Storm Arthur quickly approaching, the vessel was ordered to anchor 3 miles off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida. Team members from our office located in Savannah along with five Coast Guard units, three fire departments, Cape Canaveral Hospital, Brevard County Emergency Management, Space Coast Area Transit, the Canaveral Port Authority, Port Canaveral Pilots, the crew aboard the Victory I casino boat, P&I Club, Customs and Border Patrol and Sea Tow immediately stepped into action to protect the best interest of the 19 crewmembers as well as the 584-foot vessel. All 19 crewmembers were safely evacuated from the vessel via two MH-60 helicopters in 35 knot winds and five to six foot seas due to the approaching storm.  Once the ill crewmembers were evacuated from the vessel, T. Parker Host along with the rest of the team arranged to have five U.S. credentialed mariners join the two remaining crewmembers onboard.  The timely response made by Host and the entire Incident Response Team allowed for 21 lives and 8.7 million dollars in property to be saved.

"I have been doing this type of work for more than 25 years and this was a first for me. The crew were very fortunate in this case," said Chris Howard. The quick action from all parties involved stopped a potential tragedy and T. Parker Host is proud to have been in a position to assist the crew and Coast Guard in any way possible.
