Meet HOST Team Member, Javier Rodriguez
Meet Javier Rodriguez, a Host Terminals team member at our Port Everglades, FL stevedoring operation. As one of our skilled crane operators, Javier safely and efficiently lifts everything from luxury yachts to containers.
Originally from Cuba, Javier owned a butcher shop. “I saw it, I liked it, so I started doing it,” he laughs. “There aren’t a lot of options in Cuba to find work you love, but as a butcher, I knew I’d always have food and money.”
He moved to the United States just over 20 years ago. “I came to the U.S. for more opportunities and a better life for my children,” he says. He got a job with a stevedoring company in Port Everglades. “It was my first time ever working at a port,” he remembers. “It was completely different than anything I’d done before. I learned to operate all the equipment, and it took me almost two years to get fully trained on the different types of cranes.”
“Having my own business in Cuba taught me the work ethic needed to do what I do now,” he says. “I knew I wanted to be a crane operator as soon as I saw the cranes in action. I worked hard to get here, and I love what I do.”
Javier joined HOST in 2012. “I came to HOST because I saw the company’s growth and how impactful it was in the port,” he explains. Once he was part of the team, he says the safety and security HOST offers became his favorite thing about the company. “I appreciate how well HOST treats team members. They make our safety the top priority, which has made me a better operator.”
He says HOST also gave him the opportunity to expand his skillsets by handling a wide variety of cargo types. To be successful in his role, Javier says a person needs to have “love for what they’re doing, trust in the people they work with, excellent communication, and a dedication to safety.”
When he’s not working, he enjoys spending time with his family. He and his wife, Ana, live in Coral Springs, FL with their five children, Javier, Jr. (20), Angeline (14), Caroline (6), David (3) and Eva (15 months).
Fun Fact: Ana and Javier, Jr. are also HOST team members.
